project description /
Located in the Karaköy district north of the Golden Horn mouth on the European side of the Bosphorus river, the site of this new, five-star hotel lies in a prominent, historic location of Istanbul. Our scope was to design the entire 10,300 square-meter site of the four-building complex including four rooftop terraces.
A challenging project, close attention was paid to the restrictions of the historic promenade and three historic buildings. To fully understand the site’s aspects and restrictions, we made a thorough tour through the site, buildings and rooftops (where allowed). The history, culture and plant selection was carefully researched, and analysis was conducted to understand the sun/shade, circulation issues, build-up constraints, external and external views.
The overall master plan creates one cohesive site with a language of lush plantings of trees and understory throughout. Planting was used carefully to emphasize views toward the Bosphorus, give privacy and create intimate outdoor spaces. An emphasis was placed on the lines of the existing, historic promenade and the axes between buildings. Careful coordination between the client, architects and interior designers was important throughout the design process due to the quick pace of the project.
