project description /
In collaboration with Oppenheim Architecture + Design, this multi-family project, located within the Ticino region of Switzerland, is situated within the natural rock face cliffs and vineyards above Lake Maggiore. The project program included four luxury apartments, a fully-restored “Rustico” guest house, three single-family villas, five outdoor swimming pools, a fitness center and two fully-functioning outdoor kitchen areas. The existing steep topography and zoning regulations provided a unique approach to the overall project design.
Walkways beneath grape vine-covered pergolas and natural stone steps connect the separate outdoor spaces. In order for the architecture to not be obtrusive on the steep slope, dense, climbing vines are proposed to cover the facades and stone retaining walls, keeping the site as green as possible. Soft waves of grasses and pittosporum frame exterior spaces while Magnolias, cherries, and plane trees create shade. Bamboo is introduced to frame the site and views toward the lake while providing privacy from adjacent properties and between the private villas. This project is a complete example of landscape and architecture becoming one.
